Instagram Reels for Local Businesses: Get Real Reach
Instagram's algorithm has changed the game for local businesses. Static posts barely reach your existing followers anymore, let alone new potential customers. But Reels, Instagram's short-form video format, are being pushed to non-followers at rates that make organic growth genuinely achievable again.
For Brisbane businesses, this is a significant opportunity. A well-made Reel can reach 5 to 20 times more people than a static post, and the production quality needed is far lower than most business owners think. Your phone, natural lighting, and 15 seconds of genuine content is all it takes.
Instagram's algorithm prioritises Reels because Meta is competing with TikTok for short-form video engagement. The platform actively pushes Reels to users who do not follow you, which is something it almost never does with static posts or stories.
For local businesses, this means your content can appear on the Explore page and in feeds of people in your area who have never heard of you. A Brisbane cafe posting a Reel of latte art can reach thousands of local coffee lovers. A tradie posting a time-lapse of a bathroom renovation can land in front of homeowners thinking about their own renovation.
The organic reach of Reels is genuinely different from anything Instagram has offered local businesses in years. Ignoring it means accepting that only a fraction of your followers see your content, while your competitors using Reels build audiences you cannot.

Book Your Free CallYou do not need a content studio or a videographer. These Reel formats work well for Brisbane businesses using nothing but a phone:
This is the single most effective Reel format for service businesses. Painters, landscapers, builders, cleaners, hairdressers, auto detailers. Anyone whose work creates a visible transformation can use this format.
Film the "before" state for three seconds. Cut to the "after" state for three seconds. Add a trending audio track. Done. These Reels perform consistently well because the transformation is visually satisfying and immediately demonstrates the quality of your work.
Share a 15 to 30-second tip related to your expertise. A plumber showing how to check if your toilet is leaking. An electrician demonstrating a simple way to test if a power point is working. A chiropractor showing a quick stretch for desk workers.
These position you as an expert, provide genuine value, and make viewers think of you when they need your service.
Film snippets throughout your workday. Loading the van in the morning, arriving at a job, the team in action, a completed project, heading home. Stitch them together with a voiceover or trending audio.
This content humanises your business. People see the real humans behind the service, which builds trust in a way that polished marketing never can.
Show how you do what you do. A baker kneading dough, a barista pulling a shot, a painter cutting in clean lines, a tiler laying a perfect pattern. Process content is mesmerising to watch and subtly demonstrates your skill and attention to detail.
With permission, film the moment a customer sees the finished result. The smile when they see their new kitchen. The relief when the leaking pipe is finally fixed. The excitement when they taste their custom cake. Genuine emotional reactions are more convincing than any written testimonial.
Natural light is your best friend. Film near windows or outdoors when possible. Avoid harsh overhead fluorescent lighting, which makes everything look clinical. If you film outdoors in Brisbane, early morning or late afternoon gives the best light. Midday sun creates harsh shadows.
If you are talking on camera, make sure the audio is clear. A quiet room or outdoor space away from traffic works. If the audio environment is noisy, use a trending music track instead and add text overlays with your message.
Trending audio is a cheat code for reach. When you use a popular audio track, Instagram shows your Reel to users who have engaged with other Reels using that same audio. Browse the Reels tab, find audio tracks being used by accounts your size, and use them for your content.
Fifteen to thirty seconds is the sweet spot for most local business Reels. Instagram counts a "view" when someone watches for at least three seconds, and the algorithm favours Reels with high watch-through rates. Shorter Reels get watched to completion more often, which signals to the algorithm that your content is engaging.
If you have more to say, 45 to 60 seconds works for educational content. Beyond 60 seconds, you risk losing viewers and hurting your engagement rate.
Write a caption that adds context or a call to action. Keep it concise. "DM us for a free quote" or "Save this for later" are effective engagement prompts.
Use 5 to 10 relevant hashtags. Mix broad ones (#Brisbane, #BrisbaneBusiness) with specific ones (#BrisbanePlumber, #NorthsideBrisbane, #BathroomReno). Avoid overly broad hashtags like #love or #inspo that attract irrelevant audiences.
Always add a location tag. Tag your suburb, "Brisbane," or a specific landmark near your work. Location tags help Instagram show your content to users in that area, which is exactly where your customers are.
Consistency matters more than frequency. Three Reels per week is better than seven Reels one week and none the next. Pick a schedule you can sustain and stick with it.
For most local businesses, three to four Reels per week plus two to three stories per day is a manageable cadence that keeps the algorithm happy and your audience engaged.
Post when your audience is active. For Brisbane businesses, this is typically 7 to 8am (morning commute), 12 to 1pm (lunch break), and 7 to 9pm (evening scrolling). Test different times and check your Instagram Insights to see when your followers are most active.
Views are meaningless if they do not lead to business outcomes. Here is how to convert Reel viewers into enquiries:
End every Reel with a call to action. "DM us for a quote," "Link in bio to book," "Call us on [number]." Tell viewers exactly what to do next.
Optimise your bio. When a Reel gets traction, people visit your profile. Your bio should clearly state what you do, where you are located, and how to contact you. Include a link to your website or booking page.
Respond to every comment and DM. When someone comments on your Reel, reply within a few hours. When someone DMs you, respond immediately if possible. These are warm leads expressing interest. Treat them accordingly.
Use highlights strategically. Save your best Reels and stories to highlight categories on your profile: "Our Work," "Reviews," "Team," "Pricing." When potential customers visit your profile, highlights give them a curated overview of your business.
Track these metrics in Instagram Insights:
Reach tells you how many unique users saw your Reel. Compare Reel reach to your follower count. If a Reel reaches 5 times your follower count, the algorithm is pushing it hard.
Plays show total views including repeat watches. A high play-to-reach ratio means people are watching multiple times, which is a strong engagement signal.
Saves and shares are the highest-value engagement signals. When someone saves your Reel, they want to reference it later. When they share it, they are recommending you. These actions tell the algorithm your content is valuable.
Profile visits show how many people went to your profile after seeing your Reel. This is the precursor to a follow, DM, or website visit.
Website clicks and DMs are the conversion metrics. Track how many Reels lead to actual business enquiries.
Film one Reel today. A before-and-after, a quick tip, or a 15-second behind-the-scenes clip. Post it with a location tag, five relevant hashtags, and a simple caption. See what happens. Then do it again tomorrow.
The businesses that win on Instagram Reels are not the ones with the best equipment. They are the ones that started and stayed consistent.
